You are buying a pre-war Wards Hawthorne women's balloon tire bicycle.

This bicycle features an added-on Dana 3-speed crankset controlled by a twist shift.  The Dana transmission is definitely rare and it still works well.  The rear hub is a Bendix, and the coaster brake does function, though not as well as it did originally - we suggest an overhaul on the coasterbrake.  

This Hawthorne is equipped with gothic fenders, a great leather womens springer saddle, and very nice cruiser style handlebars.  The pedals are mismatched, and there has been a kick stand added. The Bendix rear hub is not original to the bike - it probably came stock with a New Departure model D.  It seems that when the Dana 3 speed was added, the mechanic swapped out the skiptooth drivetrain - including the rear hub - for a standard setup.  The rear rim seems to be original and matches the front - dropcenter in a greyish color with black pinstripes.  

The Wards Hawthorne head badge (silver with the red background) is still on the bike.  The original blue paint job with white accents has been scratched everywhere and there is surface rust on the frame and fenders.  The chrome of the handlebars is pocked.  The tires are both cracked, flat and need to be replaced.  The saddle is very worn and frayed and the handlebar grips are scuffed.  See photographs for details.

Notice the rear facing dropouts with adjusters, gothic fenders with arrow style details, curved fender braces, curved rear seat stays, and unicrown fork.  These details point to pre-war, most likely 1939-1941 (too much chrome for war time bikes).   They also point to Cleveland welding as the original manufacturer of the bike.  The CW was not stamped into the bottom bracket though.
