Details
Up for auction is a turn of the century Pope Manufacturing Columbia Chainless ladies bicycle. This shaft drive bike consists of only the frame and not any other parts - no fork or headset, no beveled gears - just the frame itself. We believe this frame to be a Model 51 from the late 1890's possibly 1898, although it could be from as late as 1922. But the serial number on the bike is 13N... Could 13 be the year? 1913?
BIKE CONDITION
This frame is a bit on the rough side. There is no paint, only a rust covering. No decals, no small parts or any piece of the headset. There are no pieces of the shaft drive either. Also, please view the pictures of the back triangle on the frame. The drive-side is bent in - almost touching the non-drive side - and part of the tube is creased making it more than just a quick bend back to true.
At the time, some 100+/- years ago, this bicycle was an amazing piece of technology but was soon eclipsed by an improved chaindrive that was lighter, more efficient, and more durable. And cleaner, as the chain drives started to be equipped with dress guards and chain guards. The shaft drive was marketed to Ladies as a way to keep your clothes clean.
MEASUREMENTS:
22" Seat tube
Meant for 28" Wheels
Serial #13N1888
Reference #117093
