You can be the proud owner of this vintage, made in Austria J. C. Higgins 3 speed Tourist style Ladies bicycle. JC Higgins was Sears' house brand name of bicycles from 1908 to 1961.
This tourist comes equipped with a J. C. Higgins 3-speed rear hub controlled by a JC Higgins branded trigger shifter, along with an AAB saddle (made in England), block pedals, white grips and front and rear fenders. Definitely a great version of an English lightweight Tourist style bicycle.
You can still see the J. C. Higgins logo on the seat tube but the logo on the down tube is scratched and faded - rather hard to read. The original paint is heavily scratched but there really is no rust on the frame. The spokes, chain, chain ring, saddle rails and bolts have some slight corrosion and the chrome of the handlebar is pitted. The saddle is definitely worn and some of the stitching has come undone. The pedals and grips are dirty and cracked. The fenders, while original, are not in perfect shape -several dings, scratches, and a few bends - but they are original and have the original pinstriping. The tires will need tubes.
This size ladies tourist has an upright riding position with front and rear caliper handbrakes. Easy to ride. It will fit people from about 5'3" to about 5'10".
This bicycle will definitely need a tune up along with cables and housing. The cables and white fluted housing is original to the bike.
Missing the original chainguard. The front fork does have mounts for a tire generator, but there is not one on the bike.
See photographs for details.
The chainring really is a nice addition to a quality bike. The chainring has the JC Higgins as part of the spokes. Very classy.
With a little work, this ladies tourist could make a great commuter or a fun classic rider. This bike really needs a front basket.
