1951 Schwinn Spitfire Balloon Tire Bicycle

More Views

This is a Vintage 1951 Schwinn balloon tire bicycle.  Not quite sure on the model, but chainguard reads "Schwinn Spitfire".  Most likely a Schinn build Hornet/Spitfire branded as a Spitfire.  Notice the flat midtube, skiptooth drivetrain, and the Delta Rocket Ray headlight.  Could also be a "Standard".  No headbadge or other markings on the bike to help determine model.  The bike is not rideable as is.  Definitely needs new tires/tubes and a decent tune-up.  Also missing the skiptooth chain.
No headbadge.  Missing fork trusses (if this model even had them stock - fender has slots for the trusses though and the headset looks like its missing the truss plate).

This bicycle was manufactured in Chicago on February 9, 1951.

Frame has forward facing dropouts, built in kickstand mount, built in chainguard mounts, serial number is on the bottom of the bb, flat top tube, removable seatpost clamp (marked AS), and a doglet crankset.  Leads to a post war dating from 1948-1952.

color:  lots!  green, blue, and orange, and maybe red (chainguard).  This bicycle would make a great rider with some mechanical work and some new rubber!

Seat Tube - 18"
Top Tube - 22.5"
Stand-over Height - 28" (tires are flat though)

Seatpost - original steel
Saddle - original saddle? tan top that is starting to crack and showing some rips, underside is rusted and was painted green
Stem - original steel quill style stem, ok chrome
Handlebars - original 24" wide bars, not much chrome left
Crankset - original dog leg 1 piece crankset with 5 heart design skiptooth chainring - both have no chrome left or paint
Pedals - silver painted Arnold Schwinn logo pedals, ok shape
hubs - New Departure Model D coaster brake rear hub (not sure if it is in good mechanical shape - expect an overhaul),
rims - black painted S2 rims, showing the original white and rust under (and over) the black paint, might be rideable with new tires
