You could be the proud owner of this vintage 1955 Raleigh Dawn Tourist 12L. Truly an awesome, fully loaded Raleigh built in England! This one comes in a classy black enamel spra-bonderized finish with red trim and gold lettering. It features a Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub (with trigger shifter) as well as a dynohub generator for the bullet headlamp and rear light. These lights look very, very cool. This bike includes functioning front and rear hand brakes and a stylish full gear case. One of the nicest features of these old Raleighs is the Brooks leather saddle, which are still highly desirable today. Stock on this bike were the "D" fork blades and ribbed fenders.
This bicycle is in good condition with a few points to note. The paint is in fantastic shape for a bike of its age, with just a little corrosion beginning on the down tube and some minor scraping at the bottom of the seat tube. There are a few scratches on the fenders, but the head badge and lettering are all pristine. The chrome north road handlebars have some scrapes, and the wheels are rusting at the spokes and around the outer rim. The pedals are dirty and need some attention, as does the trigger shifter. The Brooks saddle has retained its charm and makes for a handsome seat. The tires have been replaced and are in good shape. Best of all, the dynohub generator works and when you spin the front wheel the headlamp lights up. There is a wiring issue with the connection to the tail light, though, so that would need to be rewired.
This is a wonderful piece of cycling history, and anyone familiar with this era in Raleigh's legacy will recognize the timeless design and quality British steel construction that made Raleigh such a huge part of cycling. A true collector's item.
