You are buying a vintage used Raleigh Grifter MK 1. Hand made in Great Britain, the Mark 1 Grifter was a limited run bicycle offered for sale in the US between 1977-1978 after which the Mark 2 model was introduced as a large scale production model with subtle variations to the Mark 1. The Grifter was Raleighs premier muscle bike filling the gap between the Chopper and the Burner during the late 1970's to early 1980's. The bike we have for sale is almost 100% original (tires are new) although unfortunately this bike is missing the chain guard. The bike is overall in ok condition and would greatly benefit from a proper restoration. This bike features the Steel Blue paint job with Union Jack decal which does have some some surface corrosion and an unfortunate amount of flecking in the paint. The unique steel frame is lacking any major dings or dents and is not cracked or bent. Unfortunately there were small frame hooks to affix the rear fender that have broken off the frame and would need to be re-constructed. Gearing is provided via a Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed rear hub and an extremely unique twist shifter which was also provided by Sturmey Archer. The grifter is a dual 20" wheeled bike with sporting heavy duty Endrick chrome 20 x 2" rims with heavy duty spokes and a Raleigh front hub. This bicycle has not been tuned by our mechanics and may require a some mechanical work before it is fully functional. Also unique to this bike are the heavy duty padded cross bar handlebars, the very large "crescent" shaped saddle, and flared front and rear matte black plastic fenders. Braking power is provided by front and rear Raleigh steel caliper brakes and "finger grip brake levers." A truly rare and unique find, this bicycle is part of the shop owners personal collection and he is not flexible on the price. Please see photographs for details.
