When we heard about the new ultra-light Emonda and knew that Shimano was producing an 11-speed 105 component group, we anticipated seeing this bike more than ever! The Emonda product line puts an emphasis on light weight, and the Trek-exclusive 300 Series OCLV carbon fiber used to build the frame is not only feather-light, but also incredibly strong. Different carbon fiber layers are used to enhance strength and also preserve ride quality for every frame size. The BB86.5 press-fit bottom bracket also enhances torsional strength further, producing better pedaling response. The head tube of the Emonda S5 is tapered with a 1-1/2” fork crown to improve handling on steep descents and fast corners. Useful touches abound, such as an aperture in the left chainstay for an ANT+ DuoTrap speed/cadence sensor (sold separately), and an S3 chain catcher below the front derailleur mount. H2 geometry gives the Emonda S5 a taller head tube by 30mm, allowing a wider range of riders to fit comfortably with minimal stem swaps.

Shimano’s new 11-speed 105 components nearly steal the show from a brilliant frame. Compared to the previous 10-speed generation, the new 105 component group features 30 grams of weight savings, yet adds one more rear cog! The dual-control levers have infinite reach adjustability, making for easier operation for riders with smaller hands. A lighter, compact 50/34T 4-armed crankset is paired with an 11-28T cassette for long climbs and fast descents. The redesigned derailleurs require less hand strength to operate, especially when changing up to the large chainring. Even the Emonda’s new 105 brake calipers feature a new multi-pivot design that increases braking power by 10%. Bontrager tubeless-ready alloy wheels are shod with 23mm R1 Hard-Case tires, keeping weight low and enhancing road feel. Bontrager also provides the Paradigm 1 saddle, alloy 2-bolt seatpost, alloy Race handlebar and Race Lite stem.
