Trek’s Fuel EX family has seen massive changes in the industry, and yet it has no need to be re-invented by Trek. The only change has been the move to a larger wheel size, now seen in the Fuel EX 9 27.5.

The Fuel EX mountain bike is built for a wide range of steep, challenging, technical trails. Keeping in control over such a wide variety of terrain is the job of the ABP (Active Braking Pivot) rear suspension. Found exclusively on all of Trek’s full-suspension mountain bikes, the ABP suspension puts the rear pivot at the centerline of the rear wheel. This effectively isolates pedaling forces from braking forces and suspension forces. Unlike so many competitor’s bikes across the industry, the ABP rear suspension doesn’t stiffen up while under hard braking. Also, the rear shock is attached to separate moving pivots in the suspension called Full Floater. This eliminates any delay in the shock reacting to impacts, keeping the rear wheel planted on the ground. The upper shock pivot is mounted to a lightweight and ultra-stiff magnesium EVO rocker link that reduces lateral play in the suspension movement. Attached to this industry-leading suspension system is an Alpha Platinum aluminum main frame. Hydroformed and butted for strength and light weight, the Fuel EX’s frame gives the bike a direct feel in fast turns and technical terrain. An E2 tapered head tube anchors the suspension fork, improving steering precision. The press-fit BB95 bottom bracket improves pedaling response, especially during steep climbs. The new Fox Performance Series Float shock features a DRCV valve and Penske-sourced Re:Activ technology. Instead of a suspension unit that has trouble getting out of its own way, the DRCV valve in the rear shock adds extra smoothness only under big hits. Re:Activ is the tagline of how the valve reacts to impacts regressively, giving the bike a smoother feel. Air-adjustability allows the rider to tune the suspension to their body weight and trail surface. The Fox Performance Series 32 Float front suspension is also air-adjustable with 120mm of travel. A 15mm thru-axle enhances handling, especially in rock gardens and drop-offs.

SRAM’s latest 11-speed X1 shifters, rear derailleur and single-ring crankset make up the majority of the drivetrain, simplifying the bike’s mechanicals. the 10-42T cassette offers a massive gearing range so a front derailleur isn’t missed. Shimano Deore XT hydraulic disc brakes boast impressive stopping power, while Bontrager Rhythm Comp alloy wheels keep rotating weight to a minimum. XR3 tubeless-ready 27.5 Expert tires provide a vice-like grip on the trails. With a RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper post and remote bar-mounted lever, the Evoke 2 saddle can get out of the way with the push of a button on steep, technical descents. A Race Lite alloy stem and handlebar complete the cockpit. A suspension pump is included with the purchase of this bicycle for on-trail adjustments.
