The sport of cyclocross has ushered in a new era of innovation in bicycle technology, and Trek has put that innovation on display on the new 2014 Trek Boone 9 Disc. Trek began with a new approach to cyclocross geometry by lowering the bottom bracket and shortening the chainstays compared to the usual offerings by competitors. Proven in World Cup races by its aluminum Crockett stablemate, the geometry of the carbon fiber Boone keeps it nimble yet still predictable, especially on rough courses.
The Boone uses 600 Series OCLV carbon fiber, allowing the frame to be even lighter than its predecessor, the carbon Cronus. The layup of the carbon fiber layers is optimized for weight reduction as well as incredible torsional rigidity. The Boone 9 Disc needs no chainstay or seatstay bridge, reducing weight further and providing massive mud clearance. But the most noticeable feature of the Boone's frame is the IsoSpeed decoupler at the top of the seat tube. Adding only 50 grams to the overall weight of the frame, the IsoSpeed decoupler allows the frame to vertically flex far more than the usual monocoque carbon fiber frame found throughout cycling. Working in conjunction with the frame's no-cut seatmast, the ride is practically coddled as the Boone 9 Disc hits bumps, roots and every other imperfect surface feature on a cyclocross course. Comfortable riders are fresher riders. And fresher riders tend to win races. Unlike the Trek Domane, the exact positioning of the IsoSpeed decoupler is more in line with the center of the seat tube, giving the rider more shouldering room, and changing the pivot's "bump response" to low frequency vibration. The decoupler is weather sealed, keeping water and mud from entering the frame and pivot points.
Making the Boone cyclocross-friendly was at the forefront of many of its innovations. The Boone's internal cable routing reduces the need for tear-downs after muddy races or gravel rides. The BB90 bottom bracket all but eliminates flex at the crankset, giving the rider better pedaling response, especially on steep climbs or charging for the holeshot. The head tube is tapered, anchoring the carbon fiber fork for confident handling in the twisties. A 3S chain keeper has a dedicated frame mount on the drive side, giving the the Boone a cleaner look. There are even vanishing fender mounts and two bottle cage mounts, making the Boone a versatile machine for commuting and training rides. The business end of the Boone 9 Disc is an IsoSpeed Cross carbon fiber fork with a dedicated caliper mount and a 1-1/8" to 1-1/2" alloy steerer tube for additional durability.
The Boone 9 Disc is equipped with the latest shifting and braking technology, specifically the Shimano 11-speed R785 hydraulic Di2 dual control levers. Operating the Ultegra Di2 derailleurs with unerring precision (it even trims the front derailleur for you automatically!), the R785 levers also house the hydraulic reservoirs for the R785 hydraulic disc brake calipers. Using heat-shedding finned brake pads, the R785 brake calipers are very fade-resistant, even under repeated high-speed stops. The centerlock-mounted 160mm brake rotors use technology originally from Shimano's mountain bike division and utilize a sandwich-style construction of steel and aluminum for improved heat dispersion. The lever reach is adjustable for smaller hands, and the R785 lever's smaller grip radius provides better braking leverage from the hoods. The rechargeable battery is mounted internally inside the seat tube, keeping it safe and dry. Recharging is done at the junction box under the stem via a sealed port. Perfect shifting. Powerful braking. All at your fingertips when you need it. Every. Single. Time. The Boone 9 Disc runs an Ultegra 6800 46/36T crankset in conjunction with an 11-28T cassette for an effective gearing range for most 'cross courses. Need an easier gear? This might be time to dismount for that muddy run-up...
The Boone 9 Disc needed a wide-profile disc-specific wheelset for a meaty cyclocross tire, and the HED Ardennes+ Disc fills the bill. The alloy rims have a 20mm wide internal profile, giving the knobby 32mm Bontrager CX3 clincher tires a "quonset hut" profile, rather than a "lightbulb" profile. This gives the tire -any tire, really- better traction in off-camber sections, as well as a more comfortable ride quality. A Bontrager Evoke 3 saddle is matched with a Bontrager Race X Lite stem and alloy Race Lite IsoZone handlebar to complete the cockpit of this race-ready machine.
