When Trek looked for a successor to the carbon fiber-framed Cronus CX, they brought in one of the most decorated cyclocross racers our nation has ever produced: Katie Compton. The 11-time U.S. National Champion (yes, you read that right) looked at the demands that the courses made on the bike, not just making the bike lighter, stronger, etc. The Boone 9 Disc needed to have a geometry that didn't just perform in deep Belgian mud, or the soft sand of Holland. It needed to have the geometry for the technical courses found here in America as well. Trek designers knew the Boone needed to have a better fit for a wider range of riders and rider flexibilities, so the head tube was made slightly higher. Using Trek's renowned OCLV 600 carbon fiber, the Boone 9 Disc boasts very low weight for a bike that will charge into hole-shots, bunny-hop barriers and expected to be flex-free during big-ring sprints. The IsoSpeed decoupler makes the Boone 9 twice as compliant over rough terrain, ensuring that the rider will be fresher at all points of the race. A Ride Tuned no-cut seatcap and mast system keeps weight down while adding to the bike's already smooth ride quality. The E2 head tube and all-carbon fork steerer are tapered from 1-1/8" to 1-1/2", ensuring the Boone 9 would have razor-sharp handling into hairpins and fast turns. A massive BB90 bottom bracket reduces unneeded components and anchors the crankset effectively for sprinting. Internal cable routing reduces maintenance over a long and muddy 'cross racing season, while a clever 3S integrated chain keeper eliminates dropped chains on bumpy surfaces. A 15mm front thru-axle is new for this year, adding to the Boone 9's nimble feel and eliminating rotor rub due to a rubbery fork. Mud and debris are less likely to clog up due to an expanded fork crown and rear frame triangle. There's even weather sealed ports that keep the mud out of cable routing and the IsoSpeed decoupler.
The Boone 9 Disc is equipped with Shimano's 11-speed Ultegra derailleurs, 46/36T Ultegra crankset, 11-28T Ultegra cassette and chain. The Shimano R685 hydraulic/mechanical dual-control levers are the heart of the cockpit, offering easy operation and excellent brake lever feedback. The RS685 hydraulic disc brakes clamp down on 160mm Shimano Ice-Tech Freeza rotors, adding confident stopping power over hard, repeated applications. Finned brake pads also reduce heat build-up and longer pad life. The Boone 9's alloy Bontrager Affinity Elite wheels are tubeless-ready and are shod with 32mm Bontrager CX3 tires for all-round traction on grass, mud and dirt. A Bontrager Paradigm RL saddle, Race Lite IsoZone handlebar and Race X Lite stem completes this race-ready machine. Now, go pin on a number.
