Trek's lineage in racing goes back decades. Even the Saturn team (remember them?) rode silver Trek 5500's. When Trek's design team looked at how racing bikes were great for, well, racing but not for long days in the saddle over rough pavement, they brought in the Trek Factory Racing team. The designers asked the pros what they wanted for multi-hour rides and races over rough and choppy pavement, or even cobblestones. Fabian "Spartacus" Cacellara stepped up and helped the designers in Waterloo refine a revolutionary approach to soaking up low- and high-frequency vibration: The IsoSpeed decoupler. Found at the junction of the seat tube and top tube, the IsoSpeed decoupler allows the seat tube to flex much more freely, improving vertical compliance and reducing rider fatigue. The Domane 6-series has a Ride Tuned seat mast and cap, rather than a traditional seat post, allowing the bike to flex vertically even more while keeping weight down. Trek's proprietary 600-series OCLV carbon fiber is used throughout the frame, minimizing excess resin use while keeping consistant weights throughout the manufacturing process. The Domane's massive down tube is shaped using Power Transfer Construction, making the bike incredibly stiff for uphill, out-of-the-saddle sprints. A tapered E2 head tube and all-carbon fork add a precise feel to the Domane's handling, especially during high-speed descents. Anchoring the bottom bracket is a press-fit BB90 bottom bracket, adding another level of power transfer for instant pedaling response. Internal cable routing keeps shifting and braking feeling fresher, and reducing the need for mid-season overhauls due to wet weather. Speaking of rain, the Domane has hidden fender mounts and eyelets, allowing the bike to be a versatile commuter, as well as a century-eater. An aperture for a ANT+ DuoTrap speed/cadence sensor (sold separately) is found in the left chainstay, eliminating the need for zip ties. Rough roads can bounce a bike around, but the Domane's integrated 3S chain keeper prevents dropped chains (especially at critical moments on pave').
The frameset is pro-level, and so is the Domane's component list: Shimano's 11-speed Dura-Ace. Yes, this is the same component group used by the Trek Factory Racing Team in races like Paris-Roubaix, the Tour of Flanders and the Tour de France. Unstoppable reliability, incredible performance and light weight are just a few of the descriptions given to Shimano's best components. The Dura-Ace component group is found throughout the Domane 6.5: Dura-Ace derailleurs, 50/34T compact crankset, adjustable-reach shifters, 11-28T cassette, chain and multi-pivot brake calipers. Bontrager brings an alloy Paradigm Elite Tubeless-ready wheelset to the Domane 6.5, and wraps the rims with 25mm Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite tires for quick acceleration and aggressive grip. Bontrager also supplies the OCLV carbon fiber Race Lite IsoZone handlebars, Race X Lite alloy stem and carbon-railed Paradigm Race X Lite saddle.
