The Superfly 5 isn't just a "beginner's bike". It represents plenty of what Trek has learned about making cross-country hardtails excel in racing conditions.

The Superfly starts with a nimble frame geometry, allowing the rider to "point-and-shoot" through technical sections and twisty singletrack. Short chainstays reduce flex in hard cornering, ensuring a precise handling feel and improved pedaling response. By using 27.5" and 29" wheels that correspond with different frame sizes, the Superfly 5 can fit well and provide high performance to every size rider. The frame of the Superfly 5 is produced from Trek's own hydroformed Alpha Platinum aluminum, adding torsional strength as well as reducing weight. A tapered E2 head tube adds an additional layer of torsional strength, giving the Superfly 5 even better handling in tight singletrack. A press-fit PF89.5 bottom bracket also eliminates flex at the bottom bracket, allowing the Superfly 5 to leap off the start line and accelerate more easily out of every corner. Up front, an air-adjustable RockShox Recon Silver RL suspension fork soaks up impacts and washboard surfaces. A remote lockout lever at the handlebar gets the fork out of the way when climbing steep gravel roads. With a Closed Convert thru-axle at the back and 15mm Maxle Lite thru-axle at the fork, the hubs are anchored better than with standard quick-release skewers.

With all that going on with the frame, the components of the Superfly 5 had better step up to the plate, and they do. Shimano's proven 10-speed Deore shifters operate a Deore front derailleur and Deore XT Shadow rear derailleur for lightning-quick shifts. A Race Face Ride 36/22T crankset and 11-36T Shimano cassette boast a massive gearing range for roller-coaster trails and race courses. Alloy Bontrager Mustang wheels are tubeless-ready, and are shod with tubeless-ready Bontrager XR1 Expert tires for confident grip and a smooth ride. Helping to keep speed under control are Shimano hydraulic disc brakes front and rear. Bontrager supplies the Evoke 2 saddle, alloy seatpost, accessory-ready Elite stem and alloy 31.8 handlebar.
