The Contend is an excellent first road bike that works for plenty of different riders and goals.

 Light weight is the first thing a rider looks for in a road bike, ensuring as little as possible holds them back on every hill. But ride quality is sometimes overlooked. A smoother feel over rough and choppy pavement can reduce fatigue, keeping the rider fresher for longer. The Contend 1 was designed around those goals of light weight and a smooth feel. The Contend's ALUXX-grade aluminum alloy frame and Composite carbon fork reduces weight while still adding vertical compliance for dealing with ugly tarmac and potholes. The slightly longer wheelbase improves stability, allowing the rider to be more relaxed over pavement changes and broken blacktop. The Contend's more upright geometry allows a wider range of riders and rider flexibilites to fit comfortably.

The Contend's excellent frameset is just the start. Shimano's redesigned Sora components are found throughout the Contend's drivetrain. The adjustable-reach levers and reshaped hoods are much more comfortable, as well as getting the sleeker under-the-bar-tape cables. 9-speed shifting operation feels lighter, while a new 50/34T compact crankset reduces weight and improves pedaling response. A generous 11-32T cassette boasts an excellent gearing range, and is perfect for steep climbs. Lightweight alloy SR-2 wheels are shod with 700x25c S-R4 front- and rear-specific tires for confident grip. Helping to reign in speed is a set of alloy Tektro dual-pivot calipers. Giant's own alloy Connect road handlebars, alloy seatpost, Contact saddle and alloy Sport stem complete the cockpit.
