 All-day trail rides, cross-country races and general adventures are what the Fuel EX 5 29 was designed for. Lightness and strength are both found in the Alpha Platinum aluminum frame, giving the Fuel EX 5 29 a nimble feel on twisty trails while adding excellent pedaling response. A press-fit bottom bracket ensures flex-free power delivery at the crankset. Up front, the bike's E2 tapered head adds handling precision. Trek's race-proven Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear suspension makes the Fuel EX 5 29 a master of technical trails, allowing the rear brake to function independently of the rear suspension and eliminating "brake squat". The rear hub is mounted in a Closed Convert thru-axle dropout, adding torsional strength to the rear triangle. A magnesium EVO link and Full-Floater shock mount allows the rear shock to perform without torsional flex that slows down suspension response. An air-adjustable RockShox Monarch RL rear shock gives the Fuel EX 5 29 a full 120mm of travel out back, soaking up rough terrain at speed. The Fuel EX 5 29's adjustable suspension fork is a Rock Shox XC32 unit, taking on rock gardens with 120mm of travel. A 15mm thru-axle Maxle dropout adds another boost to the handling.

 SRAM's 10-speed X5 shifters and derailleurs handle gear change duty, while a Race Face Ride 36/22T crankset and 11-36T Shimano cassette add a huge gearing range to the Fuel EX 5 29. Alloy Bontrager AT-650 wheels are wrapped with 29x2.30" XR3 tires, bringing easy acceleration and buckets of grip. Helping to reign in speed are a set of Shimano hydraulic disc brakes that boast plenty of stopping power, rain or shine. Bontrager also provides the Evoke 1.5 saddle, alloy SSR seatpost, alloy Low Riser handlebar and Race Lite stem.
