Details

This is a vintage used Raleigh Sports Tourist.  We've dated the serial number to 1961 using Sheldon Browns serial number database, unfortunately we do not have any corroborating catalog scans however it seems to be an extremely close fit.  If so this was the last year that Raleigh made the Sports Tourist model, and it was the last year that the Raleigh Sports models used a full chain case as apposed to the more modern hockey stick style of chain guard (unfortunately this bicycle is missing the chain guard).  The frame is in pretty nice condition for it's age, given the durability of "The All Steel" British bicycle - it's aged as well as it was made.  This bike would be a great restoration project if you can put together the original parts.  There are some parts currently equipped which we cannot confirm aren't original, however could be or were spec'd on similar models.  These include the rear wheel, which is a genuine Raleigh flip flop hub with Raleigh single speed freewheel on one side and fixed cog on the opposing side (this was available on the Raleigh Dawn Sports model, and is also seen in the Raleigh Dealer parts catalogs of the time) with a Dunlop 26" rim.  The front wheel is completely unoriginal and is an unmarked hub matched to a Ukai (Japanese) rim, neither tires are original, nor is the saddle.  As for this being a non-3 speed model (as they were advertised, it is possible that this bike was ordered as a single speed model or that the Sports Tourist was offered in this configuration in 1961.  There are no markings on the frame from where there would have been a 3 speed cable pulley around the seat post cluster.  The seat post clamping bolt has been replaced as well and is not a Raleigh seat post binder bolt.  Somehow someone managed to fit a Raleigh Heron Lamp mount into the front caliper brake (no idea why or what functionality this may have had).  The quill stem is not original as it does not bear the Heron marking on the top and the northroads handlebar has been shimmed to fit the stem.  The brake calipers and levers are original and with new cables and housing would be perfectly functional (currently useable however the housing is extremely dried out and cracking.  Both the Raleigh Re-buildable block pedals and cotter pin crank set with Heron chain ring are original and in good working order.  The fenders as well are original and look just swell.  The cheap vinyl springer saddle is not original and would have original been a Brooks (catalogs of the time don't specify which model but a B67 would be something similar to what would have come on this model).  Great project bike.  See photographs for details.
