Durkopp was formed in 1867, producing sewing machines and expanding to bicycles in 1885. In the 1930s, they took advantage of a program in which manufacturing equipment was provided at no charge by the government for companies who produced arms. In 1941, Durkopp was honored as a "model firm of National Socialism", the highest state honor for a German company. In 1942, they began using forced labor, primarily from Ukrainian women. The company justified the working conditions as better than what they would have had under communism. Durkopp-Adler is still in business today producing industrial sewing machines.
