Details

1964 Moulton F frame bicycle Moulton founded in 1962 by Dr Alex Moulton, who designed the suspension system for the BMC Mini motorcar. He thought the conventional bicycle design was inefficient, so he made this easy mounting, comfortable, small wheeled bicycle with suspension. Moulton presented his designs to Raleigh bicycles, but negotiations for the design failed, and Moulton went into business independently. His design was extremely popular, and Moulton cycles was the second largest bicycle manufacturer in Britain (after Raleigh) by 1963. By 1965 Raleigh and others began imitating Moulton bicycles, and Raleigh bought Moulton in 1967. They never had great success, however, and Alex Moulton bought the company back in 1974. Moultons are still produced under the auspices of their founder in England today. This Sturmey Archer 4 speed is one of the earliest produced. B#2885 S#64170079
