Schwinn tandem 1940
1940 Schwinn tandem featuring "dual drive" steering
Early tandems made for women and men would traditionally place the women at the helm, though still not the captain. This tandem features “dual drive” steering, in which the front wheel can be operated by both the front and rear handlebars. This allowed the man to control steering from the rear seat, as was necessary given women’s perceived fragility at this time in history. By positioning the man in the rear seat, he would also be better positioned to provide more pedaling and braking power, effectively controlling the cycle while the woman could enjoy the ride.
